A s  stated   above  E n g lish   has  term inal  tones  such  as  the  fa l­

rising  tone  am o n g  w hich  the  first  tw o  are  called  tonem es  o r  in ­
tonem es.  E a c h   term inal  tone  has  tw o  o f  m ore  variants,  called   by 
V.  A.  V assilyev ,  allotones:  the  p rin cip al  one  is  realized  in  the  a c ­
centual  nu cleu s  alone,  and  is,  therefo re,  rep resen ted   by  the  n u ­
clear  tone  as  such  (nuclear  allotone);  the  subsidiary  ones  are 
realized   sim u ltan eo u sly   in  the  n ucleus  and  the  tail  (nuclear,  post- 
n u clear  allo to nes).  T he  principal  and  subsidiary  variants  o f  a  ter­
m inal tone are in  com plem entary distribution, cf.
