A s  to  U z b e k   it  is  said  th at  w o rd  a c ce n t  is  realized   m ore  o f­
ten w ith  co m b in atio n   o f  fundam ental  freq u en cy  o f  tone  and  in te n ­
sity,  and  th at  th e  stressed  sy llab le  is  d istinguished  from   an 
unstressed   sy llab le,  first o f  all,  by  a  g re a te r force2.  W e  reg ard   th at 
in  U zbek   w o rd   accen t  intensity  is  th e  m ain   com ponent,  w hile 
p itc h   (fu n d am en tal  frequency  o f  tone)  an d   duration  are  p ro so d i- 
cally  ad d ition al  co rrelates  o f  it.  A co u stically ,  languages  w ith  d y ­
nam ic  stress  do  n o t  use  both  intensity  an d   pitch  equally.  T h o u g h  
th ere  is  an  ex cep tio n ,  for  exam ple,  the  S can d inavian   langu ages 
use  both  d y n a m ic   stress  and  tonic  accent  in  m ore  or  less  equal  d e ­
gree.  T he  g iv en   definitio n   o f   w o rd   stress  in  U zbek  is  based  on 
p ercep tual  dim en tio n s,  though  it  w as  p ro v ed   by  instrum ental  in ­
vestigation.  H o w ev er,  w ord  stress  in  E ng lish ,  R ussian   and  U zb ek  
is  d efin ed   as  d y n am ic  b u t  they  d iffer b y   th e  action  o f  th eir p h y s i­
cal  com p o n en ts  a n d   d istribution  in  d ifferen t  syllables  in  relatio n  
to  the in itial,  m ed ial  and  final p o sitio ns  o f  polisy llabic  w ords.  T he 
com p on ents  o f  w o rd   stress  are  in  m u tu al  com pensation  and  th e re ­
fore  it  is  n ot  rig h t  to  expect  that  th e  stressed   syllable  is  alw ays 
very  long,  loud a n d  high  in to n e3.
It  sh ould   b e   em p h asized  th at w o rd   stress  and  sentence  stress 
are  differen t,  as  th e  term s  indicate.  W o rd   stress  form s  a  w ord  and  
singles  out  one  or  m ore  o f   its  sy llab les,  w h ile  sentence  stress 
deals  w ith   th e  fo rm atio n   o f  a  sentence  o r  p h rase  and  singles  o u t 
one  or  m o re  w o rd s  in  th e  structure  o f   a  phrase.  T hus,  sen tence 
stress  is  reg a rd e d   as  one  o f  the  co m p o n en ts  o f  intonation.  T h ese 
tw o  ty pes  o f  stress,  w hich  are used in differen t  levels  o f  in v estig a­
tion,  are  so m etim es  m ix ed4,  th ough  th ey   differ  w ith  th eir  co m p o ­
nents  an d   d eg rees  and  also  w ith  th eir  factors  and  functions.  F o r
