E n g lish   uses  stress,  i.e.  in  such  languages  the  sam e  seq u en ce  o f 
seg m en tal  p h o n em es  can  h ave  d ifferen t  m eanings  dep en d in g   on 
th e  pitch   distin ction ,  e.  g.  In   T h ai  n a a   has  five  m eanings: 
naa -  
m id dle tone  «field», 
(noojonaa -  
low  tone  «custard  apple», 
naa -  
falling   tone  «face», 
naa 
-   hig h   to n e  «m other's  young  b ro th e r  (or 
sister), 
naa 
-  rising  tone  «to  be th ic k » 1.  T his  type  o f pitch   d istin c ­
tion  is  so m ew h at sim ilar  w ith  th at  in  E n g lish in  w hich  a  n o u n   and  
a  verb  m ay  be  d istin g uished   by  the  p lace  o f  stress: 
'con,tract  -  
con'tract,  'extract -  ex'tract,  'di,gest -  di'gest,  'in,suit -  in'suit, 
'object -  ob'ject 
etc.
D .B .  F ry  states  that d ifferen ces  o f stress  are p erceiv ed  by  th e 
listen e r  as  variations  in   a  co m p lex  p attern   b o u n d ed   by  fo u r 
p hysio lo g ical d im ensions;  length,  loudness,  p itc h  a n d  quality.  T h e 
phy sical  correlates  o f  these p ercep tu al  factors  are:  duration ,  in te n ­
sity,  fun d am ental  frequen cy   and  fo rm an t  structure  o f   speech 
so u nd  w aves.  If  w e  co n sid er  th e  accentual  patterns  o f E n g lish   in 
percep tu al  term s,  there  are  a  nu m b er  o f   factors  that  in flu e n ce   a 
ju d g e m e n t  o f   stress.  T he  listen e r  relies  on  differences  in:  1)  the 
length  o f   syllables,  2)  the  lou d ness  o f  syllables,  3)  th e  p itch   o f 
syllables,  4)  the  sound  qualities  o ccurring  in  the  syllables,  5)  the 
k in aesth etic  m em o ries  asso ciated   w ith  his  ow n  p ro d u ctio n   o f  the 
syllables  he  is  receiv in g 2.  In stru m en tal in v estigations  h av e p ro v ed  
that  in  E n g lish   the  fully  stressed   vo w el  is  c h aracterized   by   a 
g reater  intensity,  a  high  fu n d am en tal  frequ ency ,  pitch   and  m o re 
duratio n  in  com pariso n  w ith  th e  u nstressed   vow els."  T h e rela tio n ­
ship  betw een  the co m pon en ts  o f  w o rd  accent dep end s  o n  the p o si­
tion o f  stressed  sy llab le3.
In  R u ssian  the  m ain  d istin ction   betw een  the  stressed  an d  u n ­
stressed   vow els  d epends  on  th eir  len gth  w h ich  is  a cco m p an ied   by 
th eir  quality  and  intensity,  w h ile  p itch   is  irrelevant,  th o u g h   in
