Special attention: Safety at level crossings
Level Crossings are a special challenge as they involve two different modes with very
different operational characteristics. The road user is typically private and flexible. A train
drives after according to a schedule and less flexible.
A level crossing is an intersection between road lines and rail tracks. In most UNECE member
countries Trains have priority at level crossings, and often, the road users are warned
through audible signals such as horns our bells, visible signals by means of lights and/or
physical signals through vibration of road bumps.
