Beware of the dog
"Beware of the Dog" is a 1944 World War II story by Roald Dahl which was originally published in Harper's Magazine and later appeared in his Over to You collection. Its basic plot was adapted into the 1965 movie 36 Hours, starring James Garner and Rod Taylor, and the TV movie Breaking Point in 1989.
RAF pilot Peter Williamson sustains a serious injury (the loss of a leg from a bomb) while flying a mission over German-controlled Vichy France. He bails out of his plane and later awakes to find himself in a hospital bed in Brighton, on the English coast. As he recovers, strange things keep happening, such as hearing the sound of German warplanes through the window when none would have been nearby. The nurse also mentions that the hospital water is very hard, when Williamson knows the water in Brighton is famous for being soft.
Suspicious and frightened, Williamson drags himself to the window and sees a wooden sign, “GARDE AU CHIEN” (French for “Beware of the Dog”). He now knows that he is actually in Vichy France, and that the English caregivers are Germans in disguise. When they send in a fake RAF commander to convince him to divulge his squadron’s location, he stares him straight in the eye and says nothing more than “My name is Peter Williamson. My rank is Squadron Leader and my number is nine, seven, two, four, five, seven.”
Beware of the Dog by Roald Dahl is a short story about a British fighter pilot who is captured by German authorities without knowing it after he crashed his plane. Throughout the story, he realizes that he has been taken and trapped in German-occupied France. This story teaches the reader a quite simplistic yet thoughtful meaning by observing Peter Williamson, the main character, and his actions. He was taught to never doubt of his own capabilities and to always stay true to your own idea and instinct as it can save his life and several others in this situation. If he would have listened to the nurse's words, he would have thought that he was indeed saved and was in no danger whatsoever.
This shows that he does need to stay true to what he believes and his opinion because the nurse didn’t even know what she was talking about, she just wanted to keep the Germans bad intentions a secret.
“Gracious me, what things you imagine. You mustn’t worry about a thing like that. Would you like me to get you something to read?”(pg.4). Other clues he found include the hardness of the water and the sign saying “Garde au Chien” which meant he was in fact in Germany. This of never letting your guard down and always staying true to one's own opinion, if taken in a broader sense, can be a quite appealing significance on many levels and for different people.
This theme was in all respects a great idea from the author to allure as many people as possible. Many can relate in different ways. Personally this meaning doesn’t quite appeal to me as I am very good at standing my guard and keeping my own opinion( I am very stubborn) , but for anyone else who struggles with standing up for themselves, this is very good story to make you think about how other people will try to convince you of other things.
Another one, he used was the title/metaphor of Beware of the Dog. As it was quite literal and straight when he saw the sign, he realized a) that he was not in English as the sign was in French, b) he was in Nazi-occupied France because the Germans were referred to as dogs, but also it was a reminder to him to beware. To beware of his surroundings and beware of how people are controlling him and that he shouldn’t let his guard down. He did that as he remembered what the Intelligence Officer of his Squadron said and he didn’t divulge any potentially murderous information about his Squadron. As this was a quite literal technique used by the author, it was also a very deep one and can relate to many.
