THE BRITISH ISLES
On the map of Great Britain we can see two large is­lands-Great Britain and Ireland — and many small islands. On the largest island, that is Great Britain, there are three countries: England, Scotland and Wales. Scotland is in the north of Great Britain, Wales is in the south-west and England is in the south. The second large island is Ireland. There we can see Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom (==UK), and the Irish Republic.
If we speak about the whole country, we call it Great Britain and not England, because England is only a part of Great Britain and it is not a large country.
There are many mountains in Scot­land. The mountainous part is called the Highlands. The biggest mountain in Britain is Ben Nevis. There are many lakes in Scotland and they are called lochs. The most beautiful of them is Loch Lomond. , In Wales there are mountains, forests and rivers land a lot of farms. Snowdown is the highest mountain in Wales. . In the west of England there are also mountains, but these mountains are not high. The south of England has beautiful valleys and it is called the Lowlands.
The British Isles are washed by seas on all sides: by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish, Sea in the west, by the North Sea in the east and by the English Channel in the south.
There are, many rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very large. The longest river is the Severn, but -the deepest and the most important river is the Thames. Large ships go up and down the Thames. The other rivers are: the Avon, the Clyde, the Trent, the Cam and others.
There are hardly any large forests in England now. But there are a lot of small woods there.
There are four main nationalities in the British Isles. They are the English (Englishmen), the Scots (Scotchmen), the Welsh (Welshmen) and the Irish (Irishmen). The main inhabitants of England are the Englishmen and the English language is the state language of the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Welsh speak and as their first language Welsh. The Scots speak their own language
