More and more people work at home and study at home with the development of
computer technology. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Nobody would dispute the fact that one of the most conspicuous trends in the 21
st
century is
flourishing of modern technology which enables individuals to work and study at home via the
Internet. Yet, the issue of whether this development is a boon or a bane for humanity, has become
an integral part of contentious never-ending debate. It is my opinion that this trend has both
positive and negative sides.
On the one hand, telecommuting- working at home using a computer tends to be a prime solution
to traffic congestion, the urban air pollution and petrol use. In other words, the number of people,
who travel to their workplace by car or other means of transport which has detrimental impact on
the quality of air, is reduced due to the rapid pace of technological advance and this is likely to
assist to lessen the issue of traffic congestion as well. Moreover, this development can save
valuable time of human-being since it reduces an enormous amount of time that spent on
commuting between their home and office or college. In fact, not only does this trend provide with
opportunity to find more time for favorite pastimes, but it also strengthens the family bonds since
individuals will be able to dedicate most of their time for their family members.
On the other hand, working and studying from home can lead to the sedentary lifestyle inasmuch
as people have to spend most of time in front of the computer or Internet. As a matter of fact,
individuals have become increasingly accustomed to living in a world that appreciates convenience
and inactivity and they tend to be reluctant to evade these maxims; this gives explanation of why
sedentary lifestyle is now prevailing. There is no point in denying the fact that this kind of
lifestyle has an adverse effect on health of human-being, engendering several serious health issues
including loss of vision, back pain and obesity. Additionally, this development leads to a decrease
in face-to-face communication which can isolate people socially. To put it another way,
individuals who work alone at home, are less capable of interacting with their colleagues and they
are less likely to feel a work atmosphere.
In light of above-mentioned facts one can reach a conclusion that people’s growing obsession with
working and studying at home can be beneficial for environment and family bonds, however it has
detrimental effect on the well-being of human-being.
