ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
THE CONTEXT
-
The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) has completed 50 years (1966 – 2016) of its journey maintaining the legacy of the teachers’ movement that originated in Mumbai city and very soon spread beyond the limits of the metropolitan to entire jurisdiction of University of Mumbai. Today, BUCTU is an important component of the intellectual community, not just within the confines of the University but even at the State and National levels.

The Executive Committee of BUCTU decided to commemorate its Golden Jubilee by hosting the National Executive Committee (NEC) of All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (AIFUCTO) during June 17 – 18, 2017. On this occasion, a One Day National Symposium titled“Towards Formulation of an Alternative Democratic Education Policy” will be held in University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Santacruz (East), Mumbai on Saturday 17th June 2017. A number of policy makers, educationists and leaders of teachers’ organizations, not only from Maharashtra but also from other parts of the country are expected to participate in this symposium.

The Symposium will have deliberations on the policy initiatives of the Central Government in the field of Higher Education. There will be discussion on the impact of the present policy on various sectionsand the role of Public Universities. The attempt is to move towards formulation of policy steps that will positively impact the principles of access, equity, and quality.

The BUCTU invites participation of teachers (University, Colleges, Schools) and other stakeholders (Activists and Students) to enrich the deliberations of the Symposium with their experience and perception

Those who wish to present a Paper, should submit an Abstract (email only) by 5th June 2017 of 250 – 300 words with at least 3 keywords (Times New Roman Font size 12). Abstract should include the following

THE ISSUE: Even in the 70th year of our Independence, the objectives of access, equity, and quality in the field of education, particularly higher education are yet to be achieved. The disparities in educational enrolment and attainment among different marginalized sections have not reduced. The challenge of this decade is to bring the deprived sections in an inclusive, democratic and secular education system. Three marginalized sections are identified for the parallel sessions as:
