COMPILING OF DICTIONARIES
Aim: to present the problems of compiling dictionaries, to work out English-Uzbek dictionaries.

  1. Brainstorming. Activating students’ background knowledge about types and subtypes of dictionaries.

  2. The problems in compiling dictionaries. Render on the problems in compiling the dictionaries. How these problems should be avoided?

Suggested problems: selection of head words, arrangement of lexical entries, distinguishing between polysemy and homonymy, problems of linguistic and encyclopedic character.

  1. Project work. Divide students into small groups (3 or 4 people). They should compile the dictionaries (at least 100 entries) on different topics:

      1. Dictionary of phraseological units of English and Uzbek languages.

  1. Dictionary of euphemisms of English and Uzbek languages.

  2. Dictionary of synonyms of English and Uzbek languages.

  3. Thematic dictionaries.

  4. Glossary of lexicological terms.

  5. Encyclopedic dictionary of British places of interest (sightseeing).

  6. School English-Uzbek dictionary (elementary level).

  7. Dictionary of English and Uzbek idioms.

Think about the problems while preparing the dictionaries. How you are going to present the words of different parts of speech? Approach to the theory of dictionary compiling.
