Research Challenges in CALL: Musings of a Challenged CALL 
Researcher 
Bio data 
Bryan Smith is Associate Professor of English at Arizona State University, where he 
teaches a wide selection of courses in areas within applied linguistics. His research 
focuses on Computer-Assisted Language Learning - specifically, the intersection of CALL 
and SLA. He is co-editor of the CALICO Journal. 
Abstract 
Colpaert has recently posited twelve research challenges for CALL. This presentation will 
touch briefly on the impact of each of the four contextual challenges posited by Colpaert 
in his World CALL 2013 keynote and elsewhere from the perspective of a recently 
tenured CALL researcher in the United States. I will use examples from my experience as 
a CALL researcher and also editor of a major CALL-related journal to show how we are 
complicit in reinforcing these challenges in some cases, but that it is also in our power to 
chip away at these barriers to our epistemological contribution to the field
