Dr. 
Mei-Mei Chang
is currently a professor and the chair of the Department of Modern 
Languages, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. Her 
research interests focus on computer based instruction, Computer Assisted Language 
Learning, language learning and teaching, motivation and learning strategy, and 
instructional design. 
Miao-Hua Huang
is a graduate student of the Department of Modern Languages, 
National Pingtung University of Science and Technology

Abstract 
The purpose of this study is to examine students’ performance of vocabulary learning and 
attitude toward the use of the Mobile Game-based Vocabulary Learning program. The 
program containing various vocabulary learning strategies was carefully designed and 
developed. A total of 114 university freshmen participated in the study. Fifty-seven 
students used the Mobile Game-based Vocabulary Learning program through 
smartphones while the others learned from the paper text for seven weeks. Students’ 
vocabulary learning performance before and after the experiment was measured using 
vocabulary test. Students’ learning attitude was examined th
rough a questionnaire based 
on Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The study extends the TAM by adding 
Perceived Convenience and Perceived Playfulness as variables. The findings indicate that 
students learned through the Mobile Game-based Vocabulary Learning program 
outperformed the students learned from the paper-based text. The difference between 
these two groups is significant (F =32.192, p =.000). The results of the questionnaire 
reveal students had positive attitude toward using the Mobile Game-based Vocabulary 
Learning program.
