User experience 
In order to assess the design and the usability of the application, the students (N=21) 
were presented with a questionnaire after they completed their first annotation 
assignment. Most of the students found the annotation tool not difficult to use (86%). 
Overall, the design of the tool was positively evaluated and described as ‘convenient’, 
‘modern’ and ‘orderly’. In addition, the students were asked if they found the annotation 
exercise useful. Most of them (71%) appreciated the exercise, but some also suggested 
that this strongly depends on the nature of the task (the annotation parameters and the 
video chosen by the instructor). Also, some reported that they had difficulty with refining 
the time indications of the annotation on the time line and generally found that aspect of 
the exercise rather time consuming. These issues from the pilot study were taken into 
consideration to be remedied by our tool developers.
 
On the part of the language instructors, they appreciated the flexibility of the tool. The 
only difficulty they experienced was with preparing transcriptions in TTML. We also 
observed that it is necessary that the instructors take time to familiarize themselves with 
the tool before using it in class, as they have an essential role in successfully 
implementing the tool.
Conclusion 
With regard to the much needed elaboration of the didactic potential of videos for second 
language learning, the present project introduces an innovative approach that enables 
multiple applicability of online video resources. The VIDEO.DE annotation tool is also

designed to stimulate students to actively engage with video content through 
independent annotating and peer-reviewing, while enabling the language instructors to 
guide them through that process.
Future efforts will be directed towards improving the annotation tool, by simplifying the 
process of adding transcriptions and improving some aspects of annotation visualization, 
and also towards monitoring project sustainability and integration of the VIDEO.DE 
method in the curriculum of the partner institutions for German language education.
