2. Practical Chapter. The use of proper names in idioms

2.1 The methodology of the Research
The purpose of this research is to examine the use of proper names in English idioms and to determine the origins of these names. Idioms were divided into two categories: those with personal names and those with place names. The definitions of the collocated idioms were also presented and illustrated with examples. The scope of the work includes 97 idioms chosen from the following sources:

  • Longman Idioms Dictionary (1999).

Figure 1 depicts the distribution of all taken examples.

Figure No.1 Kinds of idioms

The following research methods were used in the work:

  • Descriptive-theoretical literary analysis allowed for the examination of numerous issues concerning proper noun features.

  • The statistical method – was beneficial in processing the empirical research results.

The English language contains a large number of idioms. Among all idioms, idioms with personal and place names are not the most common. We can conclude from our research on idioms with personal and place names that idioms with personal names are used more frequently in the English language. Only 24 idioms with place names and 73 idioms with personal names were found in our sources, in percent style, 25 percent and 75 percent.. For example:

  • Be robbing Peter to pay Paul – to take money from one part of a system or organization that needs it and use it for another part of the system or organization, so that you deal with one difficulty but still have problems. (Longman Idiom Dictionary:1999:261). Idiom with personal names.

  • New York minute – (USA) if something happens in a New York minute, it happens very fast. (www.usingenglish.com). Idiom with place name.
