Money

People use and used money for buying and selling goods. Many goods served as money at different periods of time. They were: cattle, grain, leather, fish, tobacco, tea, salt and others. So people used a system of barter- they could exchange goods.

Then precious metals – silver and gold – served as money. First only coins appeared , later – banknotes.
A coin is a piece of metal with numbers, showing its value. Governments made coins of gold, silver, copper, aluminium, nickel. Now most governments issue paper money in the form of notes. Paper money is easier and more convenient in the world. Banknotes and coins are cash money or cash.
Now people also use non-cash money-cheques, banker’s cards and plastic cards.
Each country has its own currency. There are 2 kinds of currencies – hard and soft.
Hard currencies ( the US dollar and the UK pound ) are stronger and more stable than soft currencies.
English banknotes and coins
The official currency of the UK is the pound sterling which is equal to one hundred pence.
The Bank of England issues English banknotes and coins.
There are pictures of famous people on the back of different banknotes.
For example, the one pound banknote shows Isaac Newton, an English scientist and the twenty pound banknote shows William Shakespeare, a famous writer.
American money.
There are 100 cents in 1 American dollar. The Federal Reserve System issues dollars and cents. Here is the text on the face of an American dollar banknote:
