NOTICING: LANGUAGE AWARENESS

Noticing

Noticing is regarded as an important part of the process of learning new language, especially in acquisition-driven accounts of language learning, when learners at some point in their acquisition, notice their errors in production. Noticing will only occur when the learner is ready to take on the new language.

  • Becoming aware of the nuances and meanings of a language is part of language learning
  • By increasing students’ language awareness the student are better able to understand, appreciate and use the language

Variety definitions

  • Language awareness – sometimes referred to as the language of learning – refers to how we use words in our learning materials. We research language carefully, so that our resources are as accessible as possible.

  • Good knowledge about language, a conscious understanding of how language work, of how people learn them and use them

Conclusion

  • Language awareness is part of what the teachers choose to teach, there is much more to a language than simply knowing vocabulary and grammar; reproducing them in either written or oral form.
