Or how about this phrase: “If you don’t like your altitude, try changing your
attitude.” The implication, of course, is that your attitude is preventing you from
reaching great heights. Oh really? See if this phrase doesn’t make more sense:
“My attitude is the result of not being able to reach great heights for reasons too
difficult to overcome or change.”
And if you’re still banking on a good attitude to get you through life, let me say
this right now: a good attitude plus eight bucks and change may get you a cup of
coffee at Starbucks, but it won’t buy you a promotion or a raise. Those are given
to the employees who are. . .

Your only real chance for high-altitude advancement is maintaining a handful of
excuses that make you the victim and make everyone else appear arrogant,
oppressive, stubborn, dense, or vengeful. When raises and promotions pass you
by, try marching into your boss’s office and explaining that the reason you
haven’t hit any of your sales targets is because India and China never signed on
to NAFTA and are playing by their own rules. If that raises an eyebrow, then
explain that your lack of focus lately is from a painful urinary infection that
you’ve been too embarrassed to seek help for because of your secret “dual
citizenship” down there.
A loser knows that the truth will, indeed, set you free. So always be ready with
good excuses. Any excuse is legitimate, as long as it sounds better than the truth.
Also, feel free to switch excuses when the first one wears a little thin.
Remember, if changing your attitude doesn’t work, try changing excuses. When
you can do that, you don’t have to worry if your attitude is really making a
difference and getting you noticed.
