GENERAL THEME: Mary reflected on all things in her heart. Joseph took the Holy Family to Egypt . . . and then to Nazareth to protect them. Jesus went down to Nazareth and was obedient to his parents. Thus do different parts of the Scripture tell us of the members of the Holy Family. Today’s celebration gives us a wonderful model of Christian family life. Let us pray that our families may always shine forth with faith, hope and love.
FIRST READING: Genesis 15: 1-6; 21: 1-3: Abraham and Sarah were old. Sarah was barren. Abraham laments that he will have no blood heir. In response, God promises that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars. Abraham believes the Lord.
SECOND READING: Hebrews 11: 8, 11-12, 17-19: The second reading emphasizes the faith of Abraham and Sarah. In spite of every adversity and crisis, God promises to be with us if only we have faith.
GOSPEL READING: Luke 2: 22-40: Today’s Gospel tells the story of the fourth joyful mystery of the rosary: the presentation of Jesus in the temple. Joseph and Mary were faithful Jews and observed the religious law, which required the first-born son to be dedicated in the temple. In the passage, we see that even our Lord needed a human family in order to reach a mature manhood. The human family is the divinely appointed context for each and every child to grow in wisdom and grace.
