A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Kenneth Dale Stephens. WHEREAS, Kenneth Dale Stephens was born August 29, 1931, in Independence, Kentucky, the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Leontine Hoffman Stephens, and departed from this life on February 15, 2008. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Lunsford Stephens; his son, Rick Stephens; his daughter, Gisele Mann; a stepdaughter, Betsy White; four brothers, Wayne, Les, Bob, and Pete Stephens; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and WHEREAS, Kenneth Stephens retired as an installation supervisor for Cincinnati Bell and worked several years as a Boone County school bus driver; and WHEREAS, Mr. Stephens wanted to give to his community and began his public service career in 1962, when he was elected to serve on the Walton City Council. He served on the Council until 1965 and was elected mayor in 1966, serving in that position until 1971. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Florence, Kentucky, and decided to become involved in government there as well. He was elected to serve on the Florence City Council in 1996 and served until 2007, when he became too ill to continue. Kenneth Stephens was dedicated to the people and to his commitment to represent them on the City Council. He attended meetings in spite of illness, injury, and surgery and was a man of conviction who stood for what he truly believed was right and fair for all involved. Fellow council member Mel Carroll described Mr. Stephens by saying, "He was independent; he did not go along to get along." He further stated, "We're going to miss his wisdom and his judgment . . . he was a good friend, a good councilman, and he was good for the city of Florence"; and WHEREAS, Kenneth Stephens also served the community as chairman of the Board of the Northern Kentucky Transit Commission, a nonprofit organization which provided the community with handicapped lift vans, and as a member of the Florence Water Commission; and WHEREAS, Kenneth Stephens was a devout Christian and served his God in his daily life. He was a former member of the Church of Christ in Burlington and later joined the Florence Christian Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, and Chairman of the Board. He was also on the Board of the Christian Homes of Kentucky; and WHEREAS, Kenneth Dale Stephens spent his life in service to others in city government, for charitable causes, and at his church. He touched many lives in his 76 years and will be greatly missed; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. The Senate expresses its utmost sorrow upon the passing of Kenneth Dale Stephens and extends its deepest sympathy to his family, his many friends, and the citizens of Florence, Kentucky. Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving memory of Kenneth Dale Stephens. Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit ten copies of this Resolution to Mrs. Barbara Stephens, 238 West Dilcrest Circle, Florence, Kentucky 41042.
