I. Introduction
Rapid development of science and technology in the world has created the need for the
creation of new generation textbooks as an important means of interactive learning and for the
development of innovative didactic indicators of systematization of teaching materials in learner-
centred textbooks. In developed countries of the world such as the USA, Great Britain, France and
Russia, special attention is paid to improvement of pedagogical mechanisms of creation of new
generation textbooks on the basis of systematic, integrative, competence-based and modular-credit
approaches. Especially, in accordance with international assessment programs (PISA, TIMSS,
PIRLS), it is an urgent task to develop textbook creation technologies that help pupils read and
understand texts, and think creatively.
A number of scientific studies are being carried out around the world to improve the didactic
and methodological requirements for the creation of new generation textbooks based on the
principles of succession and continuity, and to develop organizational and functional structure of
textbook creation based on the integration of advanced pedagogical and information technologies.
To systematize teaching materials in new generation textbooks, it is of vital importance to fully
consider the pedagogical possibilities of the competence-based approach and develop integrative
requirements for the creation of textbooks using the benchmarking method.
Textbooks should be written based on many years of pedagogical and psychological
researches, as well as samples of advanced practices and world standards. In particular, the
textbooks in secondary school subjects should be simple, fluent and understandable in terms of
language, be appropriate to pupils’ age and psychosocial features and contribute to the growth of
their speech and worldview.
Based on the author’s approach and analysis of many definitions of the notion of “textbook”,
the following definition of the notion of “new generation textbook” can be presented: “A new
generation textbook is a learner-centred educational literature that serves to prepare pupils for
general education and life activities, and is developed based on state educational standards,
curricula and syllabuses taking into account the requirements of competence-based approach,
advanced pedagogical and information technologies”.
Every theme in the textbook should complement the previous theme and evolve from simple
to complex. It should promote teaching good manners and ethics to pupils, and cultivating in them
