parts o f Africa. This is unlawfully
killing animals for their body parts,
such as elephants’ tusks. Vultures
will circle high in the air above
a dead or dying animal. Armed
guards, who try to stop the illegal
animal killings, watch out for vul
tures circling in the sky. This helps
them to track the poachers. For this
reason the poachers dislike vultures.
After shooting an animal and re
moving its tusks or horns, poachers
often poison the carcass. They do
this to kill the vultures.
In some parts of Africa body
parts from vultures are used in tra
ditional medicines. Vultures flying
into, or colliding with, power lines,
is another problem. The BirdLife re
port highlights all these dangers. If
nothing is done to protect the birds,
the report says, Africa’s vultures
could all die out within the next 50
to 100 years. □

election
An election for Turkey’s parliament
was held on 1st November. This was
the country’s second election within
five months. The last one took place
in June. Then, the result was w hat’s
known as a ‘hung parliament’. This
is when no party has a majority, or
more than half o f the seats.
Turkey’s parliament is in Ankara,
the country’s capital city. Called the
Grand National Assembly o f Tur
key, it has 550 seats. Therefore, to
win a majority a party must get at
least 276 seats. In Turkey there are
four main political parties: the Jus
tice and Development Party (AKP),
the Republican People’s
Party
(CHP), the Peoples’ Democratic
Party (HDP), and the Nationalist
Movement Party (MHP). Elections
for Turkey’s parliament normally
take place every four years. Usu
ally, the prime minister is the party
leader with the most seats.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan set up,
or founded, the AKP 14 years ago.
In the 2003 election the AKP got
more seats than any other party. M r
Erdogan became the country’s prime
minister. The AKP won the next
two elections. In the 2011 election
