Members provide reading intervention to at-risk Kindergarten – 5th grade students reading below grade level through daily one-on-one tutoring sessions focusing on skills and strategies to break the trend of reading failure. This is an “AmeriCorps Reading Coaches” model project that includes English as a Second Language component to help bridge the language barrier in meaning and comprehension for the growing Hispanic population of this community.

Jumpstart recruits and trains achievement-oriented college students to deliver an
innovative early education program via yearlong one-to-one relationships. Jumpstart
college student Corps Members are paired with preschool children from low-income
backgrounds in the classroom setting and work together on language, literacy, social,
and initiative skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved, and communities to progress together. Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

Fulton AmeriCorps serves at-risk youth in the Fulton School District. Members serve as one-on-one and small group tutors for the Fulton Middle School, Fulton Academy and Fulton High School. Members also tutor and mentor the district’s third through fifth graders at the STARS after-school program. In addition, Fulton AmeriCorps Members assist the district as Service-Learning resources.

PAVE AmeriCorps Members provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to at-risk students in the Eldon R-I School District. Tutoring in communication arts/ reading and math occurs during the school day at five campuses and includes Kindergarten through 12th grade students as well as students enrolled in the Mustang Academy. Members recruit and work with community and parent volunteers to enhance the services provided to at-risk students.

The Missouri Stream Teams AmeriCorps Project (MSTAP) works to recruit, train and involve the 58,000 volunteer Stream Team Members in Missouri to adopt local streams and work on water quality activities in their local areas. Activities include: Water Quality Monitoring, litter pick ups, storm drain stenciling, educational presentations, outreach to new teams, etc.

Members serve as Community Outreach Specialists in several key areas of Harvesters’ mission. Each Member is assigned to volunteer services, food drives, or nutrition education. As the only food bank in Kansas City, Harvesters seeks to increase the amount of food and services that can be provided to those in need of food assistance. Members contribute to that overall mission by working to increase the quality and quantity of volunteers and food drives, and educating low-income clients about healthy eating on a limited budget.

UMKC-IHD, along with its partners the Missouri Planning Council and local Senate Bill 40 Boards developed a multi-site program “Community Support Navigators” program, the purpose of which is to increase the productivity, independence, inclusion, and self-determination of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. AmeriCorps Members in this program mentor individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to access and navigate needed resources, support access to existing generic community programs, and support the development of self-advocacy and leadership opportunities.
