The National Preparedness and Response Corps (NPRC) is a national direct AmeriCorps program sponsored by the American National Red Cross. The mission of the NPRC is to provide vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disasters and increase preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and supporting young adults who will provide integrated community outreach and education through Red Cross service activities focusing on Homeland Security.

Members serve as a team, partnered with teachers, in grades K-8 in the inner city of St. Louis. Teams focus on literacy and communication skills often using experiential learning and service learning as tools. Members also address other issues i.e. – individual tutoring, developing peer tutoring systems, after school and summer expanded learning, parental involvement, and assistance to ESL and bilingual students.

Members serve in teams with police, schools, and neighborhood agencies. The program emphasizes community problem solving, conflict resolution, and mentoring youth. Community mediation and neighborhood stabilization are also a focus. A special unit of the Safety Service Corps serves as an emergency response team to the American Red Cross, FEMA, US Forest and National Park Services, as well as state and local disaster agencies.

Community HealthCorps Members serve as Peer Education and Peer Coaches and conduct outreach activities of the Health Education Department, Circle of Care Program, and/or Health to Go Van Program. Members provide information and education about health care services, lead poisoning prevention, chronic disease management and access to other health and social services. Members also make health education presentations on wellness, pregnancy, lead poisoning, asthma management, diabetes and other health topics as assigned.

AmeriCorps Trail Rangers assist the development of the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to strengthen impoverished North City riverside communities, reinforce community responsibility, and provide educational and financial opportunities to its residents. Rangers continue to maintain the Trail area and provide services to over 13,500 annual Trail users. Rangers also give presentations that cover the topics of native plants, history, recycling, and their role.

Jumpstart recruits and trains achievement-oriented college students to deliver an
innovative, early education program via yearlong one-to-one relationships. Jumpstart
college student Corps Members are paired with preschool children from low-income
backgrounds in the classroom setting and work together on language, literacy, social,
and initiative skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved, and communities to progress together. Jumpstart is working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

A national, non-profit organization that engages educationally at-risk youth in a combination of service and youth development activities. Service activities focus primarily on renovating houses and buildings for the homeless and low-income families. Members serve directly with community-based organizations to rehabilitate abandoned housing and build new homes for homeless people, persons with HIV/AIDS, the physically challenged, and low-income families. They build awareness of community issues and generate volunteers for local service projects.
