Munoo becomes a servant

The boy did not close his eyes that night as he lay hungry and

tired in acorner his eyes that night as he lay kitchen of Nathoo Ram’s

house . He had been given an old brown blanket and though there were

great holes in it ,it was hot and his shirt became wet with sweat .

flies and mosquitoes troubled him all night .Sleep did not come to him.

In the morning he was ordered to clean the dishes ,while Bibiji

shouted at everybody.

Prem, the Babu’s youngest brother, who was a very kind hearted

man, took the Babu’s baby and elder daughter Sheila, a girl of ten, to the living-room and began to amuse them by playing the gramophone.

Munoo, on hearing the music, left the kitchen hurriedly washed

up the dishes at the pump outside and ran through the veranda into the

living-room.He wanted to hear the music, to see and touch the singing machine.”How lucky I am,” he thought,”that there is such a wonderful machine in the house where I have come to serve.”

“Your feet and hands, you monkey!” shouted Prem kindly. Munoo wiped both on the little carpet and then began to dance like the monkey of the village juggler whom he had often seen on his way back from school.

“Look, Uncle! Look!” laughed Sheila, “he is dancing like a monkey.”

“Shabash! Shabash!? cried the young Babu. Munoo was dancing with funny movements, making faces , and showing his tooth like a real monkey.

“ What is this noise? What is going on? What right has he to be in the living-room/ what right has he to laugh with his masters? Shouted bibiji coming in the middle of his dance.” Munoo stopped in the middle of the dance. “ Your place is in the kitchen ! You must not play with the young Babuand the children. We have taken you to work and as we pay you much money – more money than you ever saw in your life – moremoney than your mother or father ever saw - you must do a little work for it. And you must not touch anything in this house without washing your hands. Have you washed them? Are they clean?” Bibiji said.

“Yes,” Munoo lied, becausehe had already wiped his hands on the little carpet which was used for the feet, and it was certainly far from clean. “Well, then go to the kitchen. The tea-tray is on the table. Bring it to the living-room.Hurry up!” Munoo did not know whether to carry the whole tray or the different tea-things one by one. He had never done anything like that at home. And he thought it was better to ask. “How shall I carry them?”he asked. “How shall I carry them?”his mistress repeated angrily. “How shall I carry them? Oh, we didn’t know that Daya Ram would bring such a fool here.” Looking at the white “chalk” things on the tray Munoo asked again: “What are these things made of, Bibiji?”

“What cheek! To interrupt me when I speak! They are made of china, you fool! What else can they be made of? The fool has never seen china things! Now don’t tell the tray fall and break the cups, or I will break your bones!” Munoo lifted the tray and walked away to the living-room. “Here is the tea!”cried Prem. “A little late, but never mind!”

“The tea! The tea!” shouted Sheilaand her little sister.Munoo placed the tray on a small table and went back to the door. From there he stood watching Prem who was putting sugar into the cups that were before him, then pouring tea and milk into them. “Strange ,” said the boy to himself. He could not understand why Prem poured milk from one jug and tea from another. At home his aunt boiled milk, tea-leaves, sugar and water in one big pot.
