My Working Day

My Working Day (1)

On week days I usually get up nearly six o'clock. I do not like to get up early, but I have to, because I have a lot of work to do during the day.

I make my bed, wash my face, put my clothes on and go to the kitchen to have breakfast. My mother usually prepares, breakfast for me, but sometimes I do it myself. If I prepare my breakfast for my own, I should have to get up earlier. I do not like big breakfasts; I prefer a cup of coffee and a sandwich.

Then I go to school. It is rather far from my house and I go there by bus. I have classes till two or three o'clock, it depends on a week day. Then I come home and have dinner. I like a big dinner, because when I come home from school I am hungry.

My Native Town - Мой родной город

There are many beautiful cities and towns in the world. I would like to visit some of them, to see with my own eyes what I have read or heard about. But there is no place like home. I love my native city. I was born here and live with my parents. It's not the capital, but it is a wonderful place to live.

My city is old and modern at the same time. It is old because it was founded in the 11th century. At that time its streets were narrow, dark and dirty. Now my city looks modern because of its architecture. Almost all the buildings were built after the war. The streets and avenues are wide and clean.

How do I Learn English

Nowadays it's very necessary to know a foreign language. Knowledge of foreign language helps us to develop friendship and understanding among people.

The total number of languages in the world is from 2500 to 5000. English is spoken all over the world and very popular. There is a proverb: «Knowledge is Power» I agree with it.

I study English, because I want to read English books of great writers in the original. I want to communicate with people from different countries, I want to understand their culture and traditions. I like to travel.

Speaking English I can travel anywhere, because more than 1 billion people speak English. I have a pen-friend abroad. She lives in Sweden. I have much fun writing letters to my Swedish friend.

How do I learn English? First of all I read a lot. There is always an English book on my desk. I'm trying to learn few new words every day. To remember words better I put them into groups. For example: believe — believer—belief — disbelieve.

I listen to songs in English and try to recognize the words. I have some tapes and video-tapes in English. I like to watch different satellite TV programs in English.

I like studying English.

Английский (топики/темы): My Favourite Writer (M. Lermontov) - Мой любимый писатель (М. Лермонтов)

My Favourite Writer (M. Lermontov)

One of Russia's most celebrated poets of all times, Michael Lermontov was born in Moscow in the family of a nobleman. He spent his childhood and youth in Tarckany, in the province of Penza.

In 1830 Lermontov entered the Moscow University, but very soon he had to leave it. Then he entered St. Petersburg School of Cavalry Cadets. He finished it and served in the Hussar Regiment of the Imperial Guard.

In 1837 the poet was exiled to the Caucasus for his poem "Poets Death". In 1840 Lermontov was exiled to the Caucasus for the second time. He was provoked into personal quarrel with his schoolmate. The quarrel led to a duel. On July 15th, 1841 the poet was killed. He was not even 27 at that time.

Lermontov began writing when he was very young. One of his first writings to be published was his verse tale "Hadji Arbek".

But he won fame as a poet after his poem "Poets Death" was published. Lermontov's poems "Demon" "Mtsyri" his great novel "A Hero of Our Time" and his play "Masquerade" are masterpieces of Russian literature.

Whether he wrote poetry, drama or prose, the stamp of his genius was to be found on his works. Lermontov's influence as of a poet and a thinker on all Russian writes can't be overestimated.

ABOUT MY FRIEND

  • First, there are two different words for a male friend - друг and a female friend - подруга. These two words are used for a very good, close friend (could be your boyfriend or girlfriend, but not necessarily).

  • For an acquaintance, a person you have met just recently, the words знакомый (male acquaintance) andзнакомая (female acquaintance) are used. These words have adjectival endings in all cases (i.e. they decline like adjectives, but used as nouns).

  • For a person you know for quite a while but cannot call your "best friend" the proper Russian words to use would beприятель (male person) and приятельница (female person). Dictionaries translate these two words as "friend" or "buddy", but remember that they are not used for a close, best friend (Russian has друг and подруга for that).

  • For a class mate at elementary, middle and high school the words одноклассник (male person) andодноклассница (female person) are used.

  • For a class mate at university use two other words: одногруппник (for male person) and одногруппница (for a female person). Literally it can be translated as "group mate"

MY FAVOURITE MEAL

At the age of 11 I was lucky to visit Italy; this country charmed me at once: I really liked its narrow streets, always smiling and friendly people, a bit strange but very peculiar way of life but most of all I was impressed by their cuisine. Now I’ve tasted many cuisines among which there are Japanese, French, Chinese, and Mediterranean cuisines but I’m still sure that Italian dishes are the tastiest in the world, especially pizza.

Though I’m quite a big girl I still clearly remember my feelings when I eat pizza for the first time. I remember a waiter who approached the table with my large pizza and put it in front of me. I closed my eyes and smelled it. The smell of pizza was unfamiliar but very taking, I liked it at once. As soon as I opened my eyes my attention was attracted by cheese on the pizza which melted in unusual form, it reminded me Africa. I spent several seconds gazing at my pizza and trying to find other peculiar forms but then gave up and started to eat it.

SYNONYMS, ANTONYMS, HOMONYMS AND THEIR TYPES

Synonyms are words different in their outer aspects, but identical or similar in their inner aspects. In English there are a lot of synonyms, because there are many borrowings. There are some absolute synonyms in the language, which have exactly the same meaning and belong to the same style, e.g. to moan, to groan; homeland, motherland etc.

Sometimes one of the absolute synonyms is specialized in its usage and we get stylistic synonyms, e.g. «to begin»/ native/, «to commence» /borrowing/.

Among stylistic synonyms we can point out a special group of words which are called euphemisms. These are words used to substitute some unpleasant or offensive words, e.g «the late» instead of «dead», «to perspire» instead of «to sweat» etc.
