Fragments
Complete sentences need a subject and a verb. Without these, they are known as
fragments .
That wretched dress.
Waiting in the chemist’s for her prescription.
Never in agreement about anything.
Fragments need the context of other sentences in order to convey their meaning:
I had a perfectly ghastly time at the party. Sally again. Going on and on about
having worn the same dress as that new actress. That wretched dress.
I saw Sally again this morning. Waiting in the chemist’s for her prescription. At
least, that’s what she was pretending to do. I’m sure she was really watching to
see if I bought anything for the weekend. Bitch.
