All’s well that starts well…
Rule: when all and well are used as prefixes, take away one l – altogether,
welfare . But note that this is not the case with hyphenated words: all-embracing,
well-adjusted, well-bred .
The opposite of what I mean
The prefixes dis-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, mis- or un- create words that mean the
opposite of the root word (il-, ir- and im- are all variants of in-, used respectively
in front of words beginning with l, r, and b, m or p): disobey, illogical,
impossible, inapplicable, irresponsible, misunderstood, unattainable.
But be careful when a root word can take two or more of these prefixes, as the
resulting words will have subtly or completely different meanings: Do I
