‘How much does it cost?’ he asked/enquired/questioned.
Rhetorical  questions  –  questions  to  which  we  do  not  expect  an  answer  –  are
still questions and deserve to end with a question mark. How else should we end
them, after all?
Question upon question
Sometimes  a  question  will  be  followed  with  a  series  of  brief  questions.  When
that  happens,  especially  when  the  brief  questions  are  more  or  less  follow-up
questions to the main one, the little questions can begin with a lower-case letter
and end with a question mark. Both of the following are correct :
Who  is  responsible  for  this?  The  boy  who  cheated?  The  girl  who  told?  Or  the
teacher who left the answers on her desk?
Who is responsible for this? the boy? Sarah? or Mrs Dean, who was out smoking
a fag in the middle of the exam?
But,  as  so  often  when  there  are  alternative  ways  of  doing  things,  you  should
decide which style you are going to use and use it consistently.
Rule: Do not put a full stop after a sentence that ends with a question mark. But
when a question ends with an abbreviation, end the abbreviation with a full stop
and then add the question mark. Do you mean 3 p.m. or 3 a.m.?
