What kind of a sentence do you call that?
Many sentences simply make statements. The posh word for this is a declarative
sentence. But sentences can also ask questions, give instructions or make
exclamations:
A declarative sentence : I saw you copying the files.
An interrogative sentence : Did you copy the files?
An imperative sentence : Don’t even think of copying the files.
An exclamatory sentence : I repeat, I did not copy the files!
Note, by the way, that an imperative sentence doesn’t need a subject. In this
instance the pronoun you is clearly implied .
It’s imperative that we have your custom
Imperatives don’t have to be bossy, they can be gently persuasive, which is
probably why advertisers love them:
Let the train take the strain.
Make someone happy with a phone call.
