2.2 Contemporary music of Uzbekistan
Many forms of popular music, including folk music, pop, and rock music, have particularly flourished in Uzbekistan since the early 1990s. Uzbek pop music is well developed, and enjoys mainstream success via pop music media and various radio stations. Many Uzbek singers such as Sevara Nazarkhan and Sogdiana Fedorinskaya, Rayhon Ganieva have achieved commercial success not only in Uzbekistan but also in other CIS countries such as Kazakhstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. Perhaps, one of the best-known contemporary Uzbek musicians in the post-Soviet world is DJ Piligrim⁸. He plays pop, dance, and house music and one can hear his songs at a party, club, and other social gatherings. He is on Spotify and Youtube. His song lyrics are often multilingual. You can hear him singing in Russian, Uzbek, English, Spanish, as well as trans-language across these languages. Rap music became popular among the Uzbek youth in the 2000s. One of the pioneers of modern rap was Shoxrux. He appeared on the Uzbek music scene in the early 2000s and quickly achieved stardom. Another well-known Uzbek rapper is Shaxriyor, who has also starred in a number of movies since his music career has taken off. ⁹Common themes raised in this music genre in Uzbek are loyalty, friendship, patriotism, parental love, love, betrayal, and other moral issues that are central to Uzbek culture. The nation’s beloved contemporary singer Yulduz Turdieva was born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. ¹⁰Singing primarily in Uzbek, Farsi, Tajik, and Azeri, she is famous for her vocals. She sings popular songs, but also is a skillful musician of a classic music of the region, maqom/maqam. Yulduz Usmanova is a famous singer and actress originally from Margilan in Ferghana. The daughter of a silk factory worker, she studied at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan. Her music became very famous in newly independent Uzbekistan after 1991 and became popular across Central Asia as well. In addition to her native Uzbek, she is also famous for singing in Tajik, Kazakh, Turkish, Tatar, Uyghur, Russian and Arabic. Sevara Nazarkhan (Uzbek: Sevara Nazarxon, Севара Назархон) is an Uzbek singer, songwriter, and musician. Her musical style incorporates Uzbek folk and contemporary music. Nazarkhan has achieved worldwide fame and has collaborated with high-profile international artists. In 2004, Nazarkhan received the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award in the category "Best Asian Artist"Nazarkhan started her solo career in 2000. In 2003, she released her critically acclaimed album Yoʻl boʻlsin on the UK label Real World Records. The album was produced by French producer Hector Zazou. Following the release, she extensively toured Europe and Asia with her band. She also was the support act in Peter Gabriel's Growing Up Tour 2004. The same year, she received the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award in the category "Best Asian Artist". In 2004, Sevara recorded Goʻzal dema – a collection of folk songs. It was a limited edition CD. In 2007, Real World Records releases her album Sen. Most of the music of that album was composed by Sevara. She brought two producers to work on this album – Bruno Ellingham and Victor Sologoub. In 2009, Sevara released a hit song titled "А Он Не Пришёл" in Russian, which became a major hit throughout the CIS countries. Sevara's latest album, Tortadur – a collection of Uzbek traditional/classical songs – was released in the US on 11 October 2011, on her own record label, Sevaramusic. Sevara invited "the old school" instrumentalists for the live recording sessions. This album is not electronically treated. In 2012 Sevara participated in the Russian version of "The Voice" show.
