Every moment is the moment you decide: Will I be that magnificence, or
will I continue to pretend I’m less than what I know I am?
Imagine if I had played it safe and stuck with my trusty tried-and-true
core belief I’m no good at art. Imagine if I’d consulted my experienced
friends in advance and discovered that one-man shows are impossible to
obtain and that faces are the most difficult thing to paint. The result would
have been no art classes, no one-man shows, no explosion of creativity,
perhaps no book and no life-changing career in writing and research. That’s
the consequence of living in the box of your old beliefs: no new mind, no
new matter—instead of living in an open world of new mind, new matter.
As a thought experiment, imagine that you continue, for the rest of your
life, to hold the beliefs about yourself that you hold today. That’s one
option at the fork in the road ahead. If you take the other direction at the
fork, you challenge every limiting belief in your head and reach out far
ahead for your potential. You succeed sometimes, you fail at other times,
but either way you grow. You start to discover the boundaries of who you
really are instead of the boundaries your teachers and parents held about
you. Your new mind becomes your new matter.

Social scientists used to believe that our personality is formed very early in
life and does not change much over time. A 1989 headline in the 
New York
Times
proclaimed “Personality: Major Traits Found Stable through Life”
(Goleman, 1987). It reported on a study showing that our core traits, such as
anxiety, friendliness, and appetite for new experiences, are fixed.
The longest personality study ever conducted, however, shows that our
personalities can change beyond recognition over the course of our lives (Harris,
Brett, Johnson, & Deary, 2016). It began with data from a 1950 survey of 1,208
14-year-olds. Six questionnaires were used by their teachers to evaluate six
personality traits.
Sixty years later, researchers tracked down the original respondents, now aged
on average 77. They found that there was little overlap with their teenage selves.
Where they expected to find a good deal of stability of personality traits, they
were surprised to find little, with one exclaiming that “there is hardly any
relationship at all” (Goldhill, 2017).
Our childhood beliefs and traits don’t have to dog us through life. As we take
responsibility for change and practice desirable habits of mind consistently, we
can shift dramatically. The changes might not show up in a week or a month, but
consistent practice over time can turn you into a completely different person.
