Millions of people every year move to English-speaking countries such as Britain, America, in order to study at school, college and university. Why do so many people want to study in English? Why is English such an important international language?

In schools, colleges, advanced-study institutions and universities in Britain, America and Australia the primary language of instruction is English. English is spoken by over than one billion people, that about 30% of the world’s population and 400 million people speak English as a mother tongue. For the other 600 million people it’s either a second language or a foreign language. Nowadays, more and more people are approaching English-speaking countries to study and learn English. In this essay, I will explain why people have partiality for study in English and why English is such an important as the first truly global language.

The reasons, why a staggering number of people are moving to English-speaking countries are quite obvious. Initially, English is the language of education, politics and diplomacy, science and technology, business and trade, sport and culture. To know English today is absolutely necessary (vital important) for every educated person who is aimed to make a successful career. English language is big business that many people make a living from providing English in various forms, including teachers, writers and publishers. Secondly, English is a commodity that people would address largely to acquire for broadly sociocultural purposes: to obtain information, to converse in multinational gatherings and to travel. More than half of the world’s mail, scientific journals, reference books and eighty percent of the information in the world’s computers are in English. It is the main language of business, academic conferences and tourism, of popular music, home computers and video games. What is more, international political events – summit, meetings at UNO, official visits, important sport events – Olympiads and Championships, and international cultural occasions – all these events are held in English.

In a nutshell, English promote a friendship and understanding amongst all people of the world. With its wider geographical base, its 300 million native speakers, and its utility as a tool of learning and its importance in science, technology and commerce, English is now incontestably the international language of the world. And it is crucial to know English in order to succeed in mainstream world.
