METHODOLOGY 
To measure plagiarism and the effects of anti-plagiarism tools, 195 students in three undergraduate 
hospitality classes out of a total population of 750 took part in this research project. The first two classes were two 
sections of the introductory hospitality course, totaled 151 students. They were primarily entering hospitality 
freshmen with less than ten percent transfer students. They were informed from the beginning of class that their one 
written research assignment would be submitted to Turnitin.com, an anti-plagiarism program. The third class of 44, 
primarily juniors, had five written assignments and were only informed after the third assignment that the final two 
assignments would be submitted to Turnitin.com. None of the classes allowed collaborative work. After cross-
checking, none of the students were found to be in both sets of classes.
Turnitin.com counts the total number of words in submitted papers, cross checks with the papers in its 
database and returns a number representing the percentage of words that it suspects of being plagiarized. The 
figures in the tables below represent the percent that Turnitin.com judged to be plagiarized.
