This article is devoted to the client kingdoms of Rome, which 
played a role of so-called “buffer states” between the Roman Empire 
and the barbarian world. The author comes to a conclusion that the 
everyday practice of interactions between the Roman power and its 
satellites in the 1
st
cent. AD was based on the principle of mutually 
advantageous cooperation: the client kings ensured security and legal 
order on the frontiers of the Empire, while the metropolitan power in 
return provided its vassals with the protection and patronage.
