Concluding observations
Distance learning consists of two forms of learning: online and offline. The online form refers to category of teaching, whereby teachers and students are present on the platforms and web sites at the same time using direct face to face communication and where the transfer of knowledge is based on the live communication with the teacher, while the offline form refers to virtual presence of the teacher, through the transfer of learning materials (video, documents, tests, and other content) without direct communication with students, with (or without) occasional written communication. In the online education, the factor of personal involvement of the instructor is present, while in the offline education, the factor of depersonalization is present and insists on the transfer of assigned forms, content and materials. In both cases of education an organized and planned approach is present and is insisted on predefined goals and programs. In this work, we endeavor to discuss traditional methods, which can be successfully applied to online education of foreign language which is based on technological support, which rapidly grows and keeps up pace with technological developments, and is organized and exists globally through numerous platforms. In this paper, we seek to discuss pedagogical concepts concerned with certain methods and techniques, as well as present basic principles.Practical implications of this work are reflected in the practical application of online teaching, in syllabus and the planning of individual teaching units, whether it is a preparatory class, teaching or any other institutional program dedicated to the foreign language teaching. Also, we have emphasized that online education is based on traditional teaching and that it does not have its own developed basis of teaching. Starting from these assumptions, we have presented methods and techniques used in teaching of the language, which would be compatible with online education and we have singled out the following methods: the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Method, the Audio-Lingual Method, the Silent Way, Desuggestopedia, Community Language Learning, Total Physical Response, Communicative Language Teaching, Content-based Approach, and Task-based Approach.
It seems that online education has become a lucrative option, since it does not require large investments and with considerably reduced travel, time, and employee costs, enables students to participate no matter their geographical position or time zone. Online education has substantial benefits, easy access and timeliness, that is, everything desirable in today's economic climate. Also, in relation to the fact that the online education relies heavily on traditional education, it creates space for preservation, development and advancement of traditional models of teaching, as well as selectivity in the choice of more effective methods.
Our research has identified only some of the methods and techniques of teaching, which can be applied to online teaching, which presents us with limitations. Recommendations for future research are reflected in the identification of methods which are also related to offline teaching, for methodological operationalization and conceptualization of this phenomenon, which would contribute to the understanding of the phenomenology of distance learning.
