«STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH
PRONUNCIATION»
Abstract:
While learning English as a second language you may face with some
pronunciation problems as many people do. In order to improve this weakness side
there are many techniques. However, finding a good method to turn this situation into
good can be seen possible. Reliable and main 4 strategies of this matter are briefly
given in this article.
Key words:
Stress, intonation, songs, shadowing, recording, phonemic chart
Accurate pronunciation is an important part of learning any language, and especially
when you’re learning English. The way your speech sounds can have a big impact on
whether or not people understand what you are saying and their initial impression of
you. The tricky thing about pronunciation is that it not just a question of acquiring
knowledge, it’s a physical skill that you need to practice regularly.
There are no shortcuts to perfect pronunciation, however there are some ways you
can practice more effectively and improve your skills faster. Follow our ten top tips,
start improving your pronunciation today and take a step closer towards your goal of
perfect English pronunciation.
1.
Listen carefully;
2.
Record yourself;
3.
Get to know the phonemic chart;
4.
Speak as much as you can.
1.LISTEN CAREFULLY
Listening to examples of authentic speech is the most obvious way to improve your
own pronunciation. To improve your English pronunciation, it’s important to develop
your listening skills by paying careful attention to how native speakers of English

pronounce words and how they stress sentences. Listen carefully to the intonation in
English. Intonation is about how we say things, as opposed to what we say. It is about
the music of the language, the way the voice rises and falls when speaking.
Watching, online videos, movies, TV series and other visual media (like news
reports) is an excellent way to learn the correct way to pronounce words and replicate
the intonation of the English language. You can of course listen to radio broadcasts
and podcasts too, but observing mouth movements and facial expressions via visual
media can really help to improve your understanding of the way words are
pronounced. Where subtitles or close captions are available, try alternating between
having them turned on and turned off. Perhaps first listen with the subtitles on to get a
full understanding of what the speaker is saying and then try turning them off as you
concentrate fully on the sound of the individual words and sentences being spoken.
Try to notice the intonation that people use. You can add to this by

'shadowing'.
“Shadowing means finding a short audio or video clip that you like… that's maybe 30
seconds long, one-minute-long, at most two minutes long, and listen to it. Listen to it
a couple of times to get the meaning, and to hear where the speaker pauses, and what
they emphasize … and what the intonation sounds like – because those are really
important things too – not just the sounds. Pronunciation is much more than saying
each sound correctly because you can say each sound correctly and still sound really
hard to understand… So, find a short clip, listen to it, mark things that you notice,
then listen a few more times just to sort of let those sounds become a part of your
brain, and then start imitating. And imitate trying to sound exactly like that person.”

2. RECORD YOURSELF. People say you need to learn from your mistakes, but how
do you know what mistakes you are making? You bring the sounds from your native

language with you when you start speaking English. This is normal. Everyone does
this when they learn a new language. That’s why you speak with an accent.
How do you know what those sounds are? How are you going to reduce your accent
if you don’t know what your accent is?
It is much more powerful to hear yourself and hear your own mistakes than to have
someone tell you what your mistakes are.
You are not going to improve your pronunciation by reading out loud every day. You
will just keep repeating your mistakes without ever correcting them.
If you record yourself speaking, you can hear your mistakes and correct them.
Some steps for how to record yourself:
a)
Find a video or other recording of a native speaker you want to sound like.
Look for a video or recording with a transcript or subtitles. (A transcript is a copy of
the words that have been spoken. Subtitles are the words you see on a TV screen or in
a video). This important. You must be able to read the words! Start with a short
sentence. Later, as you practice more, read longer paragraphs.
b) Record yourself reading the same words. See below for a list of apps, software,
and websites you can use to record yourself.
c) Listen to the recording. Compare how you sound to how the native speaker sounds.
What are you doing right? What do you need to improve?
d) Practice making the sounds that you hear.
Mimic. Imitate. Copy. All these words mean the same thing: try to make the sounds
you hear. Remember, you have to hear an English word to know how to say it. Don’t
try to guess the pronunciation from seeing the word. Do you ever make fun of
someone speaking your language with an accent? Do you ever copy the way they
speak? That’s what you need to do in English.

e) Continue recording yourself until you are happy. Find a new recording of a native
speaker and repeat steps 1-5.
3. GET TO KNOW THE PHONEMIC CHART. The International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA) is a visual representation of different sounds. It might look strange
and it might feel like you are learning a whole new language, but it can really help
you with pronunciation. All dictionaries have a phonetic transcription of words so
that you know how to pronounce them. This is really helpful with English because as
we have already seen, English spelling doesn't always correspond with its
pronunciation. Think about the letters 'ough' in the words 'though', 'through', 'tough',
'ought'. It would be impossible to guess how to say those words without some help.
Here you can see the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA):
