 Method. 
For centuries, the cities of Uzbekistan have played an important role 
on the Great Silk Road, which is a historical route of intercontinental communication. 
However, the city of Samarkand was the only one that was named “The heart of Great 
Silk road”. The city of Samarkand, located in the valley of the Zeravshan River, was 
located on the ancient Great Silk Road and has more than 2.750 years it’s rich history. 
This was a key point for all travelers coming to Central Asia. Marakand (Samarkand), 
as well as almost all of Central Asia in the VI century BC. The revival of Samarkand 
took place in the VI-VII centuries, when international trade flourished on the Great 
Silk Road. At this time, Samarkand becomes the most powerful principality of Sogd. 
Zoroastrian temples, religious buildings of Buddhists and Christians are being built on 
the territory of the city. The wall paintings of the ruler’s palace have been preserved. 
As a “ pearl of Islamic architecture” and a “ Mirror of the world” Samarqand has been 
known since ancient times. A contemporary of Rome, Athens and Babylon, this city 
has already celebrated its 2750

anniversary. The city reached its heyday during the 
reign of Amir Temur, the greatest military ruler of Central Asia after Genghis Khan, 
when Samarqand was chosen as the capital of the powerful Mavaraunnahr empire. At 
this time, extensive urban planning work was carried out. The great ruler gathered 
talented builders and artisans here in Samarqand, whose works of art have been 
preserved for centuries. In this city, which is preserved in historical ruins, madrasas, 
mausoleums and minarets, you can feel the breath of history itself. 
Results. 
The Great Silk Road represents one of the most precious legacies in the 
history of mankind. It is important to note that this path was never a single highway, 
but included various routes that branched out like the root of a mighty tree. So, one of 
the main roads crossing Asia from east to west, began in the capital of ancient China, 
Chang’an, and followed to its northwestern borders. Having crossed the Tian Shan, 
part of caravans went though the Fergana Valley and the Tashkent oasis to Samarkand, 
Bukhara, Khorezm further to the shores of the Caspian Sea, and part – from Samarkand 
kept the way to Bactria and India. The main trade item on the caravan routes was silk, 
highly valued throughout the world. For example, in the early Middle Ages, silk was

the most popular unit of account, displacing even gold from circulation. So, in 
Sogdiana, the price of a horse was equal to the cost of ten cuts of silk. Silk was paid 
for the work done, for the maintenance of mercenaries, silk could be paid off from 
punishment for a crime.
