Focus and Context
Outcomes Framework
Throughout this unit students will extend their understanding of the 
place value system up to one million and decimal places to thousandths, 
focusing on the patterns of the base ten system. These numbers will 
be experienced through base ten materials, grids and number lines.
Students will explore estimation of numbers using a variety of strategies 
including number relations and benchmark numbers. They should gain 
an understanding of the relative size of numbers (magnitude) through 
meaningful contexts such as population, measurement, and capacity of 
venues.
GCO
Develop number sense.

Represent and describe whole numbers to 1 000 000.

Describe and represent decimals (tenths, hundredths, 
thousandths) concretely, pictorially and symbolically.

Compare and order decimals (to thousandths) by using:
• benchmarks
• place value
• equivalent decimals
