extant - still existing in spite of being very old
genealogical - related to the history of the past and present members of a family or families
genealogy - the study of the history of families
Grimm’s Law - shows the systematic relationship between consonants in Germanic languages and consonants in other Indo-European languages, stating what phonetic changes took place.
hypothesis - / haɪ'pɒθəsis/ international word
in question – the things, people etc in question are the ones that are being discussed
inevitable – certain to happen and impossible to avoid
instrumental - important in causing something to happen
internal reconstruction - is a method of reconstructing an earlier state in a language's history using only language-internal evidence of the language in question.
irregularity – smth that doesn’t follow the usual pattern
labial – a consonant sound that is made with the two lips
langue - language
literally - according to the most basic or original meaning of a word or expression
macrolinguistics - a field of study concerned with language in its broadest sense and including cultural and behavioral features associated with language.
marked – A marked change or difference in behaviour or in a situation is very obvious or noticeable
microlinguistics - a branch of linguistics that concerns itself with the study of language systems in the abstract, without regard to the meaning or national content of linguistic expressions.
misleading – confusing
nasal – If a person's voice is nasal, it has a particular sound because air is going through their nose when they speak: a nasal accent. 
Neogrammarian – one of a school of philologists arising in Germany about 1875, advocating the more exact formulation of phonetic law and its more rigid application to linguistic phenomena, maintaining that phonetic laws admit no real exceptions, and recognizing analogy as a normal factor in linguistic change
