Solar energy (energy from the sun) is vital to the existence of planet Earth. It 

passes  through  the  atmosphere  to  Earth's  surface.  This  is  not  a  problem,  provided 

that  Earth  sends  some  of  this  solar  energy  back  into  space.  This  process  is  called 

radiation.  However,  in  recent  years,  partly  because  of  pollution,  Earth  has  not 

radiated  enough  of  the  solar  energy  back  into  space.  Some  of  the  solar  energy 

reflects  back  onto  Earth's  surface,  making  Earth  warmer  than  it  should  be.  This 

process  is  called  the  greenhouse  effect,  and  the  result  is  global  warming  -  planet 

Earth is now hotter than it should be.
