photographic im ages on a film one a fte r th e other 
and display them very quickly producing a m oving 
im age. Then inventors around th e w orld began 
to develop cam eras that could record m ultiple 
fram es in 1 second and the cinem a w as born!
The very next year Thom as Edison, 
fo u n d e r o f the Edison Laboratory 
and inventor o f the light bulb, wanted 
to use this m achine. He im m ediately 
asked his c o m p a n y’ s p h o to g ra p h e r 
W illiam D ickinson to create a m a ­
chine th a t w ould allow seeing m ore 
than ju s t 12 im ages in succession. 
W illiam D ickin so n ’s idea was re vo lu ­
tionary - th e kinetoscope.
In o rd e r to d o this, M uybridge se t up 12 c a ­
m eras along the ra ce tra ck. Then he to o k th e 12 
im ages fro m th e ra ce tra ck. These im ages could 
be view ed in succession on a m achine Z oopra- 
xiscope that he had invented. That m ade it seem
like th e im ages the m selves w ere m oving. It was 
the firs t step to m otion p ictu re s as w e know it.

the a ir d u rin g a gallop?
