GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

The following coursework assesses student’s ability to critically analyze and write a solid report discussing key macroeconomic 

issues. 

Each  team  should  consist  of  5  students  who  belong  to  the  same  group  (E.g.  6EC1  etc.).  The  students  should  set  up  their  own 

teams based on mutual respect and understanding.  

Deadline for group formation is September 23

, 2020. After the deadline, the students will not be allowed to swap or change their 

teams.  The  groups  –  for  those  students  who  could  not  (did  not  want  to)  join  to  any  group  –  will  be  randomly  formed  by  the 

Module Leader. If these students find themselves in smaller groups, it is their full responsibility to bear all the difficulties of the 

CW tasks and the presentation. Participation in the CW presentation is compulsory, in other words, the students who do not attend 

the presentation will receive ZERO mark.

CW TASK 

Each  team  chooses  two  groups  of  countries  where  they  must  demonstrate  the  ability  to  write  a  comparative  analysis  with 

related literature review. 

To complete the assignment the following tasks should be accomplished: 

1.  The  students  should  choose  two  groups  of  countries  each  containing  minimum  of  five  countries.  The  choice  of  the 

countries should be according to the following criterions: 



 

The  first  group  of  countries  should  consider  five  Central  Asian  countries,  which  are  located  geographically 

close to each other. Explain basic similarities of these nations based on ethnicity, linguistic and traditions.  



 

The  second  group  of  countries  should  be  chosen  in  a  similar  vein,  which  are  located  geographically  close, 

whose people are ethnically alike, speak similar languages and share similar cultural norms and traditions.  



 

The  locations  of  the  second  country-group  should  be  in  different  geographical  vicinity.  To  form  the  second 

country-group, the students may consider countries from Africa, Europe, South America, Central America, East 

Asia, Middle East, Oceania etc.  



 

People  from  two  country-groups  preferably  should  speak  different  languages,  and  share  relatively  different 

traditions and cultural norms. Practicing religion is an exception, the students may choose two  country-groups 

in which the dominant religion is the same. 



 

Overall, the students should provide relevant arguments that people from two country-groups are different. This 

fact is important to make comparative analysis of two country-groups in later tasks.  

Provide relevant evidence for the choice of countries that meet the country specification criterion. (15 marks) 

Note:  The  right  choice  of  countries  for  the  second  country-group  is  very  important  for  the  quality,  success  and  easy 

conduct of the work. 

2.  Review only three academic journal articles that discuss cross-country comparative analysis of macroeconomic factors. 

The  students  are  encouraged  to  choose  academic  articles  that  conduct  comparative  analysis  of  country-groups.  If  the 

students are not able to find group-wise comparative studies (e.g. Central Asian countries versus African countries, Latin 

American  countries  versus  North  American  countries,  etc.)  then  they  may  consider  individual  country  comparative 

studies (e.g. Russia versus China, Japan versus Korea, etc.). While reviewing the papers particular emphasis should be 

given to the data description, the empirical methodology and the key findings of the literature. (15 marks) 

Note: If the literature studies the relevant topic in line with the countries under the observation then it would ease the 

task. 

3.  Obtain  relevant  macroeconomic  statistics  –  GDP,  GDP  per  capita,  Unemployment  rate,  Inflation  rate,  Government 

budget, Public debt, etc. – and critically analyze the recent development trends in both country-groups. Furthermore, a 

special emphasis should be given to social and political factors of each country that lead to positive or negative economic 

outcomes.  The  use  of  comparative  analysis  within  (single  country-group)  and  between  the  country-groups  is  highly 

recommended. (20 marks) 

Note:  Time-series  data  should  be  considered  for  within  group  comparative  analysis  and  aggregated-mean  data  for 

between country-groups. The data should start at least from 1991 or 1992.Exceptions can be made if the data misses for 

earlier years. 

4.  Conduct the regression analysis of economic growth for both country-groups: 



 

Specify the dependent variable as GDP per capita and construct relevant determinants of the regressand; 



 

Estimate the results using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS); 



 

Provide the regression results estimated with and without robust standard errors; 



 

Conduct specification tests to avoid biased outcomes; 



 

Interpret the results and compare the findings of both country-groups. (25 marks)

Note: The students can apply more advanced econometric models – such as 2SLS or GMM – if they are really aware of 

using these tools. Blindly applying the advanced econometric tools in the analysis is strongly discouraged. 

5.  Considering  the  countries  under  the  observation,  explain  and  test  the  convergence  hypotheses  within  and  between  the 

country-groups. To accomplish this task, consider the following two conditions: First, find the average economic growth 

of  each  country  for  the  available  years  under  observation  and  then  graphically  check  whether  the  countries’  growth 

levels converge in some point. Second, if there is not a possibility of convergence in the first case then consider that the 

most  developed  country  (within  the  group)  is  in  steady  state  with  no  future  growth  or  decline,  while  less  developed 

countries’ economies grow with a rate of X, which is the average economic growth of each less developed country. 



 

Within  the  group  analysis:  how  long  will  it  take  to  less  developed  countries  to  reach  the  growth  level  of  the 

most developed country (in the country-group)? Provide the graphical representations of convergence points for 

both country-groups, individually; 



 

Between the  group analyses:  using the aggregated-mean  statistics of each country-group, plot and  graphically 

demonstrate the convergence points of both groups. Examine the probability whether the growth levels of two 

country-groups converge in the future; 



 

Provide  only  two  (maximum  three)  tools/suggestions  that  would  stabilize  the  economy  and  facilitate  the 

economic growth of the less developed country-group; 



 

Try to explain the reasons, why the economic growth in these two country-groups is different? 



 

Conclusion. (25 marks) 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 

In  undertaking  coursework,  students  should  be  able  to  select  pairs  of  country-groups  that  meet  the  selection  criteria.  While 

reviewing  the  relevant  literature,  the  students  should  discuss  the  key  findings  and  contributions  of  each  paper.  They  should  be 

able to find relevant statistics and assess the quality of each data based on the reliable data-sources. In the third part of the course 

work, the students should be able to employ relevant comparative analyses techniques that are easy to follow and show the factual 

differences  in  macroeconomic  factors.  The  students  should  demonstrate  proper  econometric  skills  to  derive  robust  statistical 

evidences that are supported by relevant empirical models and specification tests. In the last part of the coursework, the students 

should  provide  clear  policy  suggestions  that  would  serve  for  effective  economic  growth.  Finally,  they  should  be  able  to 

demonstrate high-level presentational skills, including logical ordering of material, satisfactory use of English and referencing. 

High grades are awarded for: 



 

high quality works that are in line with the coursework requirements; 



 

selecting unique pair of country-groups; 



 

reviewing relevant literature; 



 

conducting professional econometric analysis; 



 

demonstrating good interpretation of the results supported by the previous literature; 



 

suggesting effective policies and tools in stimulating economic development. 

High grades excel in at least one of these criteria: 



 

Comprehensiveness and accuracy; clarity of argument and expression; 



 

Specific and clear discussions of current debates. 

Middle grades demonstrate a good understanding of relevant details and a sound grasp of basic principles. 

A low grade demonstrates some knowledge and/or understanding of the general idea but lacks in the following: 



 

Descriptive only; 



 

Does not answer the question directly; 



 

Misses key points; 



 

Contains inaccuracies; 



 

Assertions not supported by author or evidence.

Format of the coursework: 



 

All copy of the paper should be typed in 12-pt Times New Roman font and Line Spacing 1.5-lines;

Citations and references should be presented at the end of the paper.
