Elective courses are a form of in-depth study of one of the subjects of the choice of students, a means of developing the cognitive interests of students, their abilities, as well as the professional orientation of students.
Unlike extracurricular activities, electives are held in the area of the curriculum, according to the schedule, within the allotted time, with a constant composition of students. In modern schools, extracurricular activities are conducted from the 1st grade, the subject matter of the courses is constantly increasing.
In the 80s, the following classification of elective courses was adopted:
1. Elective courses of an advanced level, the purpose of which was an in-depth study of the content of the main course;
2. Special courses, in which only certain sections, topics of the main course or some sections of science not included in curriculum are studied in depth;
3. Applied optional courses. They are associated with the development of interests in modern technology and production;
4. Interdisciplinary elective courses, which use information from 2-3 subjects.
Currently, there is the following classification of elective courses:
Additional chapters and questions to the main course;
Special courses
Systematic courses;
applied elective courses;
Electives of the advanced level;
elective special courses;
Courses that deepen the basic material of the school (i.e., systematic courses);
Extra-curricular elective courses (i.e., special courses);
Elective courses focused on applying knowledge in practice;
Interdisciplinary elective courses;
Circles, sections, creative associations in the centers of creativity (centers of extracurricular activities).
Currently, the types of elective courses have become more diverse and interesting, focused on each student. The modern classification of elective courses, in contrast to the generalized classification of the 80s, has a more detailed structure and is differentiated depending on each significant aspect.
Conducting an optional course involves equipping the office with the necessary equipment in working condition and the presence of a didactics and methodological fund that allows you to create an atmosphere of language and stimulate verbal and mental activity based on standards. A teacher interested in success usually has in his office interesting recordings of poetic works, modern and popular songs, a set of filmstrips, transparencies and, of course, books for reading, different in genre and graded in difficulty. The modern equipment of the classroom and the availability of materials for its use requires the teacher to have well-developed computer skills.
