Types of motivation
- concerned with factors outside
the classroom.
1 - EXTRINSIC
- concerned with what takes place
inside the classroom.
2 - INTRINSIC
Motivation = easier learning + easier teaching
Who is a

motivated learner
MOTIVATIONAL DIFFERENCES: adults & children
Global motivation --> task is seen as interesting -->
less effort --> noticeable pay-off
views a language as a key to
social/cultural opportunities - association with
members of different cultures. --> Result: most
successful learners.
Learner 1:
is simply studying for an
immediate short-term goal, e.g. to acquire
course credits. --> Result: no high degree of
achievement.
Learner 2:
‘motivated’ learner: one who is willing or even eager
to invest effort in learning activities and to progress.
whether they see the learning as worthwhile, whether they
like the language and its cultural, political and ethnic
associations.
the wish to learn for its own sake or interest in
tasks
2 TYPES OF EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION:
student's wish to succeed in an external exam, or
peer-group influences.
sources are inaccessible to the influence of the
teacher: the desire of students to please some other
authority figure (parents)
INTEGRATIVE
INSTRUMENTAL
student is attracted by the culture of the target language
community.
student believes that mastery of the target language
will be instrumental in getting them a better job,
position or status.
