NEWS OF THE CENTER
Damtew Teferra and Philip G. Altbach's coedited book,
African Higher Education: An International Reference Handbook
(Indiana
University Press, 2003) has won the Conover-Porter Award of the African Studies Association. The award is presented in even-
numbered years to the author of the most outstanding achievement in African bibliography and reference works published dur-
ing the previous two years. It is administered by the Africana Librarians Council.
Dr. Roberta Bassett, formerly a Center graduate assistant, has joined the faculty of the Center for Higher Education
Management and Policy at the University of Southampton, UK. Laura Rumbley, a CIHE graduate assistant, recently served as rap-
porteur for the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria.
The CIHE is planning to inaugurate podcasts of interviews and other relevant materials in order to provide a new way of access-
ing news and analysis concerning higher education worldwide. Further information about this initiative will be forthcoming.
Dr. Damtew Teferra has assumed a new position as director for Africa and the Middle East at the Ford Foundation International
Fellowship Program, based in New York. CIHE's Africa Web site will continue under the supervision of Dr. Teferra and with the
assistance of Laura Rumbley at the Center.
Center director, Philip Altbach, gave the Eggertsen lecture at the annual conference of the Comparative and International
Education Society in February. He also gave a plenary talk at the national conference of the American Association of Collegiate
Registrars and Admissions Officers and will speak at the national meetings of the Society for College and University Planning in
the summer.
