A  standardised  variable  ‗Z‘  as  under  can  express  the  difference  between  actual  and  expected 
number of the runs:

The  null  hypothesis  (AARs  occur  randomly)  will  be  accepted  (or  rejected)  at  5%  level  of 
significance against (or in  favour of) the alternative  hypothesis (AARs do not occur randomly) 
depending on whether computed values of Z is within the range of critical value of ±1.96. 
The  sign  test  on  AARs  carried  out  to  test  the  null  hypothesis  that  there  is  no  significant 
difference between the number of positive and negative AARs.
