Location and Platform Requirements
Satellite communications has greatest benefits for remote, portable, and mobile
applications. Therefore, the Earth station may need to be designed to allow flexibil-
ity in its operation no matter where it might be located. The industry has produced
a wide variety of supports and integrated packages that allow the user to obtain
broadband satellite communications almost independent of location.
Portable terminals like the one shown in Figure 9.5 can be carried on board
a vehicle or airplane and set up in the field. Once power is connected, this terminal
can be commanded by the operator to automatically acquire a GEO satellite. In
Figure 9.6 is a shipboard terminal with similar communications capabilities. In
addition to auto-acquire, the shipboard terminal will also correct for ship direction
and motion.
While satellite newsgathering (SNG) vehicles have been used for nearly three
decades, they have moved from large vans to something compatible with an SUV.
Naturally, modern SNGs have the same auto-point capability as the portable and
shipboard terminals already described. An approach used by the military employs
this type of antenna because it can be operated while the vehicle is in motion. A
prototype of such a system is under the radome of the vehicle shown in Figure
9.7.
