In this chapter, the basic topics of PID control are described, while focusing particularly on those 

properties of PID control that are mainly related to an application in industrial processes. The 

theoretical aspects of PID control are subject to automatic control systems and are taught in the 

corresponding textbooks, thus no further analysis of this subject will be performed here, as it is 

assumed that the reader already has a basic background on control theory for understanding the 

operation of PID from a mathematical approach. Thus, in this chapter, specific reference will be 

made only to the essential elements of the PID control theory with a focus on the application of 

PID and the proper corresponding tuning of the overall control scheme. More analytically, this 

chapter will present how PID controllers operate and why they have prevailed in the field of indus-

trial control for almost 70 years now, without having appeared as something more effective than 

their digital implementation.
