The principle of adaptation asserts that individual members have the right to function competently across the widest possible range of family activities. With adaptation, family members develop a sense of responsibility for one another and confidence in their ability to perform necessary activities. As an outcome, any family member, during times of need or crisis, will be able to take over the activities of others. The principle of adaptation is an extension of the principles of membership and quality. It adds flexibility to the family and moves toward eliminating discrimination on the basis of age and gender. Overall, members will have fewer expectations about who should perform what types of tasks.
