active voice:
The form of a verb in a clause such as The author wrote the book in which
the agent (the doer of the action, in this case The author) is the subject,
and the person or thing affected by the agent (the book in the above example)
is the object. Compare with passive voice.
adjacency pair:
A two-part construction, such as a greeting, in which the first part (e.g.
one person saying “hello”) elicits the second part (the person being greeted
also replying with “hello”). Question/answer sequences are another example
of an adjacency pair.
adjective phrase:
A phrase such as very delicious whose head is an adjective.
adverbials:
A clause function realized by noun phrases, adverb phrases, and preposi-
tional phrases expressing notions such as time, place, and logical connec-
tion. The key test for many adverbials is that they can be moved around in
a clause:
