Feelings and symptoms are connected to life events.
Just as
your PTSD symptoms began with a traumatic event,
how you
feel is usually connected to what’s going on in your life
. When bad
things happen, people feel bad; when good things happen, they
tend to feel better. The reverse principle is also true:
how you’re
feeling affects what happens in your life
. If your mood is anxious
or down or numb, it’s hard to focus on activities, participate in
them, and enjoy them. You can miss out on what’s going on,
which of course only makes you feel worse. IPT focuses on this
connection between what’s happening in your life and how you’re
feeling. Your therapist will work with you to understand these
connections between mood and events and help you come up with
ways to deal with them.
